About Us

Vibrant red roses blooming densely over a garden fence.

Our specialities

  • Weed control without toxic sprays. We hand pull weeds, and aim to stop reseeding cycles by removing unwanted plants before they flower and seed.
  • Monitoring of plant health. We are not the type of company to come in and blindly chop hedges or spray for bugs. When we perform regular maintenance in your gardens we can keep a close eye on how every aspect of your garden is fairing and treat issues as they arise, before they become detrimental.
  • Spring/Fall/First Visit clean ups. Maybe your garden is just emerging after 6 months of snow cover. Maybe it's covered in leaves and debris from fall. Maybe it's a new to you garden, or it's been a few years since it had some attention. We don't judge! We're here to help, and love a good clean up to ensure your gardens get through the changing of seasons in the best condition possible.
  • Intentional and thoughtful care. Our gardens are our havens. They are often our most commonly accessed connection to the natural world around us. We know how important our gardens are to you, your loved ones, and the world around each garden. We are here to keep your gardens healthy and happy, so you can enjoy them for years to come!

Our Mission

Our mission at Northern Roots is to provide specialized and eco-centered garden care and maintenance to homeowners and businesses in the Les Cheneaux area. We're gardeners with a passion for both sustainability and beauty; we combine both concepts in all our work.

Who we are

Hi! I'm Andie. I grew up here in the beautiful Les Cheneaux area, and I consider myself very lucky for that privilege. After graduating from Cedarville High School in 2013, I moved to Colorado where I got to be a ski bum for a few years. Eventually I found my way to Durango, CO where I first dipped my toes into professional gardening, and I was hooked from day one. I dove into learning everything I could about the Colorado native plants, natural gardening techniques, and important topics such as water reclamation, sustainability, and protection of our ecosystems. After moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2020, I tried my hand at a new plant-based career and became a florist. Working as a florist I gained new understandings of flowers, houseplants, and design. Starting in 2022 I split my time between working as a florist for Essential Florist in Albuquerque, and doing side jobs gardening for Albuquerque homeowners. I continued this until 2025, when my spouse and I decided it was time for a change of pace and we made the long trek (with 2 cats and 2 dogs!) across the country back to my hometown: Hessel, MI.

My story in a nutshell is that I have spent the last 8 years working in some capacity with gardens, plants, and flowers. I absolutely love all things plants. I have a constantly evolving houseplant collection, and I love to grow food and spend my summers eating fresh, organically grown produce from my own garden. Getting to design flowers for my loved ones for birthdays or big events is one of my biggest joys. I am always happiest when I am outside, with my hands in the dirt, water, or snow. I believe that we live on a planet full of finite resources, and that as humans we should work to minimize our impact on the ecosystems around us. To tread lightly on the Earth so that we can be  kind residents for our time here.

If you’ve read this far, I want to say thank you. Gardening, sustainability, plants, flowers, all things green are my passion. My goal is to continue to learn, educate and inspire others to be the best stewards of the land they can be as well.
